It’s starting to feel like spring – the time for showing more skin, is finally here. So try these easy tips to boost your metabolism and feel your best.
Eat Breakfast: There is evidence to support the age-old advice ‘Eat like a King’ first thing in the morning. If you skip breakfast your blood sugar drops and metabolic rate slows. Research published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found participants who ate between 22% and 55% of their total daily calories at breakfast gained only 1.7lb on average over four years. However, those who ate less than 11% of their calories first thing gained nearly 3lb. Try a bowl of porridge with a scoop of ground flaxseed to keep you fuller for longer.
Energy Boosting Smoothie: Add some natural energy powder to your smoothie to help blast fat. Eating protein with every meal, is like putting a log on your metabolic fire, according to Sarah Wilson author of Simplicious (Macmillan, £13.60) . We like the raw, plant-based power provided by Sun Warrior protein. The Classic Plus blend contains rice protein, peas, chia seeds, quinoa and amaranth (Classic Plus, £18.71 for 500g).
Green Tea: The combination of caffeine and catechins in green tea boosts metabolism and aids weight loss according to a number of studies. In a 2015 study published in the journal Clinical Nutrition , high dose green tea extract resulted in significant weight loss, reduced waist circumference and a decrease in total cholesterol.
Wild Fish: The omega 3 fatty acids founds in oily fish – think sardines, mackerel, and wild Alaskan salmon – have been shown in studies to boost weight loss. Men given 6 grams of fish oil per day reduced body fat in a study published in the International Journal of Obesity.
Choose Twisted Chair: Swap the office seat for this dynamic yoga poses to burn calories and boost your metabolism. Twisted chair pose will fire up your glutes and boost lean muscle – which increases your fat-burning potential. Holding this position will also wake up your internal organs, aiding digestion. Simply stand with you feet and legs together. Bend your knees and sink down as if you were about to sit on a chair. Bring your palms together in front of you then twist your body bringing your right elbow to your left knee. Hold for 30 seconds, then repeat on the other side.
